About DLRR

Since our inception in 2000, DLRR has saved more than 2,585 Labs in need! Because Arizona's animal shelters are severely overcrowded, DLRR is often the last chance a Lab may have. Any treatable illness or injury and of course, space issues force kill shelters to put even friendly Labs on the euthanasia list. And that's where DLRR steps in! The majority of our Labs are from Arizona county pounds and shelters. We also take owner turn-ins when we can and there is no shortage of Labs that need our help due to the economic hardships that many of their owners are now facing.

Corks and Collars is just one of many fundraisers DLRR conducts throughout the year to meet the operating and veterinary expenses of the organization. Veterinary care continues to be our biggest expense. We take the health and well-being of our dogs seriously and do our very best to make sure that all of their medical needs are met. DLRR pays for any veterinary treatment required and ensures that all labs receive updated immunizations and microchips. We also work to reduce pet overpopulation by funding spaying or neutering for all of our Labs. Last year, DLRR's veterinary costs exceeded $95,000. We expect to at least meet or exceed that figure in 2011.

Here are just a few of the Labs that are benefiting from DLRR's ability as a rescue to pay for medical expenses:

Halo Halo was emaciated with Valley Fever and suffering from a brachial plexus injury, where the nerves in the armpit area are torn away from the spinal column. Halo was from the pound e-list and we have no history on what trauma he suffered. With our vet's recommendation, DLRR recently had the surgery to amputate in order to give this happy boy a better quality of life. Halo is recovering now from this extensive surgery and will continue rehabilitation in his loving forever home..
Trigger Trigger was hit by a car and his owner didn't want to have his broken leg fixed so they told the vet to euthanize. DLRR was called and we took him in. Trigger's surgery required a plate and screws to make sure his leg healed properly but Trigger has made a complete recovery and is now in his forever home.
Java Java is a gentle young chocolate boy who had also been hit by a car and suffered severe wounds. DLRR paid for extensive surgery but just as Java was recovering, he had a fatal set back when the diaphragmatic hernia he suffered during the accident ruptured further and compromised his lungs and heart. We will all miss this sweet boy!
Cider Cider was on the E-list at the pound and is currently recovering from a severe case of untreated Valley Fever. Cider came to us emaciated and hardly able to walk. Several times a week he received Abelcet infusions and is now gaining weight and feeling so much better. In typical Labbie style, his sweet nature has always shown through! Cider has been placed in his forever home.
Bob5 Bob5 was found as a stray and turned into another rescue. He was then surrendered to DLRR so we could be sure to place him in the best home. Bob has entropion just like Ezra and underwent surgery to correct this and is now with his forever loving family!
Ezra Ezra came to us from the pound emaciated, covered in ticks and with a terrible skin infection. Poor Ezra also had entropion on both of his lower and upper eyelids so his eyelashes turned in and painfully rubbed on both of his eyes. Once Ezra was feeling better he received his much-needed eye surgery. Happily, as soon as Ezra became available for adoption, he was welcomed into his forever home!
